Our History

Cruise America Headquarters, Mesa, AZ The employee owned, Mesa, AZ. based company, founded by Florida native Robert Smalley Sr. in 1972, ranks as the nation's largest RV rental firm with 132 locations and about 300 employees at peak season in the U.S. and Canada. Smalley’s sons, CEO and Chairman Randall Smalley, and President Robert Smalley Jr., were brought on board straight out of college to help start up and run the company, and remain at the helm today.

"My brother and I represent the fourth generation in the vehicle rental business," Smalley said, tracing his rental roots back to his great grandfather, Frank Couture, who rented cars in south Florida during the 1920s. Robert Smalley Sr. logged numerous years in the car rental business, including serving as president of car rental giant Hertz, before recognizing and capitalizing on an untapped niche in the motorhome rental arena.

Cruise America, Since 1972 The Smalley’s family-oriented business culture has been one of the few constants at Cruise America. One of the keys to Cruise America’s longevity, according to Randall Smalley, is being aggressively proactive. “You want to anticipate the market and then correct small problems before they become larger problems,” he said, noting that the company’s current rental fleet will balloon to an all-time high of 4,500 vehicles this summer. “Our objective over the years has been to keep raising the bar, to keep getting better.”

Create an environment where your contributions lead to bucket-list road trip memories across the world. With such a unique product, we want our employees to enjoy working here while providing the best service we can to campers all over the globe.

We believe our employees should share in the success of our company in a tangible way. That's why we created an Employee Stock Ownership Plan ("ESOP"). Participating in the ESOP program means employees are part owners of the company and benefit financially from a job well done. Cruise America's ESOP never involves contributions from the employees; all contributions are entirely made by the company. In this way, there is direct incentive for employees to work hard and take pride in what they do; that is why our assistance is better, our work ethic rocks, and our smiles are bigger. At Cruise America, being an employee owner means having a stable presence while building your future and the long-term investment that comes from company ownership.

With more than 48 years in the industry, we’ve been around the block, quite literally. With more than 120 locations in 33 states and five Canadian provinces, there are a variety of opportunities for employees to obtain different work experiences and discover new skills. We want to foster those skills and help each employee grow in the company while growing our business. An ESOP shares that common interest as the bottom line directly correlates to the employees. It’s a great alignment that drives further success.
